Explorers
Explorers is for younger teens, ages 12-14, who are looking for an off-campus challenge. Explorers is similar to our wilderness Treks, but with seven days of hiking on the Blue Ridge Mountains and a unique Pioneer immersion experience.
Personal Growth
Explorers learn the value of self- and group-reliance as they build the skills to accomplish their journey. This translates to increased self-confidence and independence. The targeted goal of completing the hike promotes advancement in focus, goal-setting and completion, and internal motivation. Throughout the trip, instructors guide campers in improving social interaction skills and behavior management, both through the group process and individually.
Activities
Explorers help prepare for and carry out a 7-day trek on the Blue Ridge Mountains, incorporating the ways and lore of early explorers. Hiking is planned for early teenage campers, and builds gradually. Skills learned include flint and bow-drill firestarting, making cordage, spoons, and bowls, storing water in gourds, and tracking. We will share stories of explorers from this country and around the world. Group members' sense of accomplishment and feeling of solidarity with their peers after completing a challenging hike are celebrated up on their return to campus. The group will engage in several high adventure activites over the course of their journey, including an invigorating day of whitewater rafting and a high ropes course or rock climbing.
