Adirondack AdventureAdirondacks Adventures is a multi-skill adventure for campers ages 13-17 with ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, or similar learning disorders. While exploring the Saranac Lake region of the ancient and beautiful Adirondack Mountains, participants will develop self confidence, self regulation, communication skills, and a sense of community. Over the course of the 3-week expedition, participants realize personal growth as they achieve together each of the challenges before them.
Activities:
Starting out in log cabins, campers learn the necessary camping skills before gearing up and heading out for their small-group adventure. Each group weaves together a weeklong backpacking expedition, rock climbing, and flat water paddling on pristine wilderness lakes, as they journey through the mountains and back to base camp. At the beginning of each new activity, appropriate skills and safety are taught to ensure a safe and positive experience. Along the way, staff guide the group through problem-solving, decision-making, and group interaction exercises, molding them into a cohesive and cooperative team.
Personal Growth:
Through a model that seamlessly incorporates adventure, service, and learning, campers have many opportunities to develop social skills, self confidence, empathy, and initiative. These characteristics are developed in a highly targeted small group, allowing campers to be challenged appropriately. Insight-oriented group discussions allow participants to practice conflict resolution and problem-solving. A diverse and exciting set of experiential activities and nightly camp-fire discussions brings the values-based approach to life.
