Academic Semesters for Teens with Asperger's SyndromeTalisman's Semester Programs are experiential academic alternatives for adolescents ages 13 - 17 with Asperger's Syndrome, high-functioning autism, and similar Autism Spectrum disorders. We focus on improving social awareness and interaction, independence, and academic self-motivation. Based out of our Zirconia, NC, campus, the small learning group (8:2) plans and prepares for 1- to 2-week trips that immerse them in multi-sensory lessons in natural and cultural history, geography, and scientific exploration. On and off campus, students practice independent living skills and group dynamics, and engage in focused social skills groups.
Academics: Individual Academic Plans are developed for each student based on testing for learning styles and placement. Plans are coordinated with each student's home school to ensure a smooth transition. Credits are awarded in conjunction with Cedars Academy; they include Math, English, Social Studies, Environmental Science, P.E., and Journalism.
Social Development: Small group living offers many teachable moments on cooperative living, age-appropriate communication, and problem-solving. Residential staff lead insight-oriented group discussions to work through daily issues. Each evening, a formal social skills group focuses on a particular topic. Students also learn budgeting, scheduling, nutrition, and personal responsibility.
